May I help you
I read a survey on " the most courteous! " . It was very disappointing to know that not even a single state from India was named in the first 15. Further, it was discouraging to know that MUMBAI topped " the least courteous! " I will disclose the most civilized city at the end of this blog just to hold some suspense :)
Off late I have started noticing how polite people are. In my office, we need to push open a door to cross the main entrance. People just push it and release it the minute they are in. They just don’t bother to see if anyone is coming behind them and that the door might hit them. If a person drops a pile of papers, there are hardly one or two who come to help them. In most of the shopping complexes, customers are not thanked for their shopping. Not like it’s compulsory but it just reflects the country’s mannerisms. Indians take a lot of time to reply to e-mails. We are slow in responding when compared to the rest. When we see a person fall, not only do we stop ourselves from helping them out but also roll and laf just on their face and walk off :
Courtesy crops up with image building. May be to grab surya s attention, girls rush to help a blind man cross the road and to get the babes focus, the guy gets up and offers his seat to the old lady standing next to him in a bus. At least this way they are doing some good: D
I was beginning to believe that, we are living in a world of brutality where morality is looked up with relativism and these "courtesies" are realistically defunct!
There are some incidents that took place, which nonplussed me to come to the above conclusion.
1. I was pushing 2 suitcases and a carrying a bag along a straight path. As it is understandable, I was struggling: P A guy (complete stranger to me) came and offered to push the 2 suitcases. I was really glad to be helped by some one :) I wonder how many of us will really offer to do this when we see some1 being over loaded.
2. Recently my sister and me met with an accident. We were on our scooty. Both of us fell off our bike after being hit. I cud easily get up but my sister was finding it tough coz the bike was on her. I saw my sister bleeding and I was too shocked to react. By the time I cud get up and help her out, there were many who came , washed her injuries, tied her bleeding with a cloth and caught an auto to help us go to the nearby hospital. I owe a million thanks to them :)
3. I was on my scooty and my friend was in her car. She was going in the front and I was following her. We had to take a U turn on a slope. While she was waiting for the vehicles to go, suddenly she lost control and slipped back and the car hit my scooty. The faintest of touch by the car made me drop my bike :P I was trying hard to pick it up. My attempts were nugatory :( Being a neophyte in driving my poor friend couldn’t leave the car and come out. Ha ha ! (I m sure to get slapped by her :P ) There came an old man, picked my bike (with my assistance) and handed over to me. Then he said " sorry ma, I couldn’t help properly as I was just discharged 2 days back after getting a kidney operation done" I was taken aback. There were other people who could have always helped me. I experienced an ambivalence of emotions for him . There are still nice people in this world.
It s after all, these small things in world that make us feel really happy being a part of it.
Though we are much behind in being courteous, it is never like we cannot become better. It would be better if we ape the western courtesies than the western culture ;)
Now for the suspense, the city ranking 1 in being courteous is NEWYORK, USA. " After 9/11, NewYorkers are more caring. They understand the shortness of life "

Hy Chitra!
Hands down, this is your best effort till date.
good narration and stlye.
And the old man's story(who couldn't even lift a scooty:(
was particularly moving!
Was it cooked up??
and one small doubt....:)
why is it that you always bring in Western cultures into everything you write?#@$%*
finally,Waiting for your next blog
"EAST or WEST"
:)
gurlie i loved dis pnt of urs " ape the western courtesies and nt western culture"..awesum pnt...and bout helpin sum1 who is loaded and strugglin wid deir luggage..2 b honest i wudnt cuz mst ppl thnk u r up2 no gud wen u go out of ur way to help dem..dey wud thnk i'm tryin to steal sumthin eheheheh :P

but DEFINITELY v need to do a lotttttttttttttttt more thngs 2get 2 dat std!
"People just push it and release it the minute they are in"
So how many times have u been swept off your feet when the door swings back on u? :)
hey chiru...nice blog....really good one....i really see that you have not made any baseless conclusions.Everything that you have mentioned is the consequence of your experience.
There is something i would like to say at this juncture...Although there are people in our country who are willing to help...it is minority...or people are simply scared like vids mentioned..i have had experiences where i wanted to help but stayed behind due to circumstantial barriers.I am studying in the United States and I certainly feel that Americans have courtesy as their last name. There are very helpful people and have a lot of compassion. When i was working at the cafeteria I cut myself with a knife. It was a very small cut that even i did not give much importance to,but they called the health services people and did everything to make me feel physically and mentally normal.
The human life has a lot of value there. They have wonderful road systems that is so organized and well maintained. The people also realise the importance of driving carefully to avoid problems to them and others.
I have changed a lot after going there.I keep the door open for the next person behind me even after i have entered or exited. This is only one of the few things that I do after getting awareness.I have started saying sorry if i cross someones way or rub against them which i mite have not always earlier...I have mellowed down as a person and I treat any stranger with utmost politeness.
People have started changing...the time has come for india to shine...although the pace is not much ....gradually people have started being 'compassionate'...thats the rite word...more than courtesy....courtesy sounds very formal and reminds me of obligation...compassion towards other people is the true way to living...
But the bottomline is....India is changing...there is more and more awareness created....and I am quite sure in the next 25 yrs india will have atleast one state that will on the list of 'most courteous'..
well done chiru!!!!indeed a very enlightening blog...guess i had more to say than u did...keep blogging!!!!!
madame if u drop a pile of papers, how many of them do u wanna come n help..one or two rnt enuf is it :P :)
jokes apart, lots of our ppl need to be more courteous n many of us seem to b losin out on our basic moral values n ethics!!
after reading gudu's comments i forgot whose blog i was reading :P
good work by both of u!! :D chit,
u could've added instances where u have been courteous or compassionate(as gudu would say it) to ppl (like how gudu did).. :D or couldnt think of any eh?? :P
chitra,
i wanted to damage u with my comments. but then this blog of urs is simply the best that you can write. i was so amazed by the way you approached this topic and it has been well narrated.
i can add more to this topic but your blog will sure, make people think. so i dont think there is need for more examples.
good job.
hey being courteous does not mean being caring. indians are very caring. if something happens to you they will surely come to help. but they wont in stuffs you can do ourself, like opening a door or picking up stuffs that are fallen etc.
but then americans though they will help will small stuffs, they wont go out of their way to help with bigger stuffs. so i still love my india :)
Hey chit!!!
Nice one....I guess the last few instances had inspired u to come up wid such a blog, gud effort.Everybody shud have experienced such things many-a-times and now tat u have come up wid such a blog it's time for us to think abt it seriously.
Another inspiring incident -I once saw few working ppl takin their time out to get the road thru which they usually travel into gud shape."If u r not doin it,I will do it".Each one of us shud possess such an attitude.cudn have thought of a better title, suits perfectly.
I guess noemaun was pin-point wid his view and i surely go wid him.Guess nowadys ppl don like ppl who r carin, feel they r losin their independency cuz of tis,so it's high time we learn how to be 'compassionate'by followin the western courtesies.
Keep ur gud work goin:)
